Bush Lantern ( Octagon )

Location Thirroul
Category Residential House

Introducing a most unique project. This family found one of Thirroul’s best kept secrets: Nestled amongst the native gums, beside a meandering stream, the sun trickles through the escarpment canopy and softly settles upon a dilapidated 1970’s octagon home, built by the bare hands of a German clockmaker. With an appreciation for this forgotten era of orange glass, mission browns and parquetry, the client saw hidden value in retaining the eclectic craftsman’s charm. And we are so glad they did! Stepping forward they engaged the free thinking minds of the TAKT Architecture team and collectively made a decision to launch this unique building into 2020 with the grace, elegance and dignity it deserved. We considered it a privilege to be engaged on this project. We’re not young and we’re not pretty but we do brag a team of experienced minds and weathered hands.

This build engaged our teams entire skill set for the following reasons: The original construction relied heavily on adhesives and unorthodox methods which created a sound structure but proved difficult to modify. There wasn’t a 90 degree intersection to be found, connections were angular and required our trigonometry super powers. With the 8 sides of an octagon we had many conversations like “on the south east junction....no the north east....hang on turn the plan around” However all the twists and turns gave birth to a property that can be compared to no other.

A project and client that we will always remember with fondness.

Watching our home being refashioned and transformed by a creative and innovative team of designers and craftsmen was an awesome experience.
Our lantern home brings us such joy. We delight in each corner, each angle, each carefully considered detail.
Thank you Jason and your team for the care and thoughtful attention you paid to crafting us such a special family home. You are an incredible group of artisans who took on an impossible task with fabulous results.
Thank you Brent and the Takt team for your vision, your unfaltering patience and your ability to beautifully calm our eclectic octagon.
We will always be so grateful to you both. Few architects or builders would have given this unusual little building such a fabulous second chance. Thank you
